At the 1949 annual town meeting a committee consisting of Ray Higgins, Roy Tuell, and Robert Wilder, Sr. was elected to oversee the forming of the fire department and purchase equipment. At the same meeting $1500 was raised and used to purchase a 1931 Diamond T Pumper, hose and accessories. The department's first meeting took place on August 30, 1949 . Ray Higgins acted as chairman and the following temporary officers were elected: Secretary, Don Phinney and Treasurer, Robert Wilder, Sr, and annual dues were set at $1.00.
At the second meeting, on September 13, 1949 , Harry Tracy, Chief of the Calais Fire Department, attended and went over the duties and activities required of a fire department. On October 7, 1949 the name, Dennys River Volunteer Fire Department, was decided on, by-laws were adopted, and the first officers were elected (see retired crew). A board of directors consisting of the three town selectmen and four other individuals voted on and appointed John Hallowell as the first Fire Chief. April 10, 1950 a meeting was held for the purpose of incorporation and the same officers and by-laws were used.
The very first fire station was actually an old grain shed located on Main Street on the banks of the Dennys River . In 1950 the station was moved across the street into an old drug store where they stayed until the fall of 1962. In the spring of 1962, Max Gardner donated a piece of land on King Street to the department and a new fire station was completed in the fall, where they are still located today.
In 1965, after witnessing the death of a young woman at a local picnic, William Juska of Eatontown , N.J. , set into motion the events that led to the forming of what is today the Dennys River Ambulance Service.
He purchased a 1959 Cadillac ambulance from his home department and upon learning of his plans the Eatontown Volunteer Fire Department offered to fully equip the ambulance at no extra charge. All of this was donated to the Dennys River V.F.D. in order to form not only the first First Aid squad in the Dennysville area, but one of the first squads in the State of Maine .
The first ambulance arrived in Dennysville on May 6, 1966, driven by Mr. Juska and Herbert Scott, Charles Stonehan, and Robert Abbott; three members of the Eatontown Volunteer Ambulance Corp, who then stayed to offer instructions on the operation of the new ambulance.
On May 10, 1966 a special meeting of the rules committee was held at the fire station to set up the by-laws pertaining to the formation of a voluntary first aid squad. These by-laws were adopted on May 17, 1966 and eighteen people volunteered to join the newly formed squad (see retired crew).
Today, fifty-eight years after the idea of forming a fire department in the Town of Dennysville was put into motion the department now has twenty-eight firefighters and twenty-five ambulance crew members (see active crew), along with five trucks, one rescue truck and two ambulances.
